Low Concentration of Rotenone Impairs Membrane Function of Spodoptera litura Cells by Promoting Their Aggregation

Rotenone is a widely used botanical insecticide, which can inhibit the mitochondrial respiratory chain of various insect cells, while mechanism its toxicity to cells needs further investigation. The purpose this study was understand level low (0.2 µg/mL) and high (20 concentrations rotenone in Spodoptera litura (SL-1) using trypan blue Coomassie brilliant staining assays. Our found that possessed cytotoxicity against SL-1 with varying effects action between concentrations. After low-concentration treatment, showed obvious aggregation time-dependently, fastest rate observed under first 8 h treatment time, but no such phenomenon at concentration. Furthermore, caused squeeze each other led destruction cell membrane structure function. Taken together, results suggested concentration exhibited chronic toxic effect significantly different from rotenone, provides new insight into cytotoxic rotenone.
